It’s 4 A.M. Trucks, rickshaws and cycles ply in and out of the market complex. There’s hollering, name-calling, tossing of sacks, and arranging of flowers in stacks and heaps. Till the time the Gudimalkapur Flower Market in Hyderabad suspends its operations for the day, these activities continue endlessly.
It comes as no surprise that flower mandis commence operations for the day as early as 4 A.M. The Gudimalkapur Flower Market gets its flowers not only from within the country but also from countries such as Thailand and Singapore. From a central market, the flowers are then supplied to multiple vendors across the city. The perishability of flowers is the reason why these markets commence operations early in the day.
One such morning, I too set foot in a flower market in Hyderabad. It is the main flower market in the capital city of the not-so-old state of Telangana which acts as the congregation point of scores of vendors who reach there early in the morning before sunrise to both buy and sell.
